The Devonian

Rodney, the Rascal’s late father, was from Devon, a lovely, green-tinged region in England. Exposed rocks from the geological Paleozoic era were discovered along the county’s northern coast, including a vast diversity of fish fossils.

The Devonian era, named after the region, became known as the Age of Fishes because it heralded the advent of the first species to dwell on land. The Rascal’s Father came to South Africa in 1969, and this wine honours his life, which spans two continents, as well as his love of wine, geology, and fish!

The grapes were gathered in three batches and cooled before being whole bunch pressed. The free flow juice rested overnight before being racked into 5 year old, 300ltr French oak barrels for natural fermentation. During the whole procedure, no SO2 was introduced. The wine undergoes 100% pure malolactic fermentation and is left on the lees until December, when it is bottled.

Tasting Note

The Devonian’s bouquet is a mash-up of citrus, floral, oatmeal, and honey flavours. The palate has a delicate opening with a creamy texture, and the slight acidity from the limey aromas is well balanced by the sweetness from the floral notes. The aftertaste is somewhat nutty with a mineral undertone.
