The village of Mayfield is a historic village in the high weald of East Sussex, England. Mayfield is situated in the heartland of the traditional hop industry, with traditional Oast Houses scattered throughout the countryside. It has a beautiful high street with raised red brick pavements and the village sign shows the figure of a young woman and children in the flower covered meadow, an illustration of the Saxon origin of the village name Maghefeld, or ‘Maids Field’, accompanied by a figure of St. Dunstan pulling the Devil’s nose with his blacksmith tongs. The village was voted by The Sunday Times ‘The Best Village in England’ and hailed ‘The Sweetest Village’ by Vitctorian poet, Convetry Patmore.
